A friend wanted a pair of bags that would get himself, his wife, and two young boys from Pittsburgh to their ski chalet 70 miles to the southeast. This scenario has several components to consider – 2 young boys (which means more mouths to feed), a semi-mountainous route, an environment that’s more cold than hot, and a fortified house at the end of the journey.
It’s also important to note that he did not want his kids to carry anything. He only wanted one big bag for himself and a supporting bag for his wife. He also did not want to stop and cook meals, so all his food is consumable on the move. Although there are ample roads from his home to his site, we picked a route that would take backroads and follow rivers ¾ of the way.
These kits are complimentary, meaning the male and female versions carry separate items, but they’re also built to be stand-alone kits in case they get separated. All food and water items have a 4-5 year shelf life.
